about

This collaboration with photographer Katja Stuke started with seeing her posts of trees in Ukraine on Facebook. Each day, there would be a new one, from a city I'd be currently hearing the name of in the news as Russia invaded and various forms of destruction were enacted.

I gradually realized that Katja wasn't actually in Ukraine taking the pictures directly and these weren't photos from some past visit she'd made. Rather, I realized that she was going to Ukraine virtually, strolling the Google Street View pasts of currently war-torn streets. These trees were growing in those locations, but couldn't escape. They would experience whatever befell them.

And, Katja's project continues.

She is making portraits of enduring witnesses. She is searching out living breathing markers of place and change. She is documenting potential victims of perpetuation. She is making portraits of fellow earthlings that often outlive us and record our cruelties upon them and against others.

With these energies as inspiration, I played contra bass layers, and later added tenor saxophone layers.

Photos for 9 tracks from "Trees in Ukraine" series by Katja Stuke

»Every day bad news from Ukraine. Still. Every day a new name of a village, town or city in Ukraine. Every day a screenshot-photo of a tree in that town. A tree to just hold in for a moment. A tree as a reminder. A tree as a metaphor for time. And a quote referring to that town.« Katja Stuke, Trees in Ukraine, since 24.2.2022
